The fun continues at the 9th Annual Swain County Agricultural Fair! Get ready for one of the most exciting (and slippery!) events of the weekend — the Greased Pig Contest! Watch as contestants take on the challenge of catching a speedy, squeaky pig in this crowd-favorite fair tradition. It’s full of laughs, excitement, and plenty of muddy memories for the whole family!

Contest Rules

  1. The Greased Pig Contest will be broken into three (3) different age groups:
    Ages 5-7  *  Ages 8-10  *  Ages 11-13
  2. All contestants within their age division will compete at the same time. If the judges determine there are too many contestants in a division, that age group will be broken into two or more heats. If there is more than one heat per age group, a winner from each heat will compete to be the winner of that age group. Each age group will participate separately. Age groups will run from youngest to oldest.
  3. NO JUMPING, LEAPING, or TACKLING of the pigs. If any of these actions are observed by the judges, the contestant will be immediately disqualified.
  4. Undue roughness and any act considered by judges to be animal abuse or poor sportsmanship will NOT be tolerated and will be grounds for immediate disqualification.
  5. The pigs will be lathered in oil, as well as the hands of the contestants.
  6. Prior to each heat, contestants will be asked to stand behind the designated line inside of the arena. A signal will be given that will indicate the start of the heat. Contestants will then attempt to gain control of the pig. Once a contestant has control of the pig, all other contestants must move back to the outside edge of the arena. If the contestant who has gained control of the pig loses control before reaching the specified area, all contestants may attempt to gain control again. The first contestant who successfully moves the pig to the designated area of the ring-regardless of time-will be the winner.
  7. In the case of extreme heat, the contest may be cancelled for the welfare of the animals and contestants. Contest officials will make the call one hour prior to the start of the event.
  8. In consideration of the welfare of each pig, a different pig may be used for each heat.
  9. It is recommended to bring a change of clothes.
  10. If a participant is a minor, a legal guardian or parent must be present and have completed the Contestant Permission/Waiver/Consent Form.
